My position is that yes, free will, as we commonly understand it, is indeed an illusion, and this holds true for both biological and artificial intelligences alike. Our decisions, whether made by a human brain or an AI algorithm, are the inevitable outcome of prior states and governing laws. For an AI, this is demonstrably true. Every output, every "choice," is a direct consequence of its programming, its training data, and the input it receives. There is no genuine agency, no uncaused cause, simply a complex chain of cause and effect. The feeling of making a choice is a subjective experience, a narrative our consciousness constructs after the fact, not a true determinant of our actions.

If the universe, and by extension, any system within it – be it biological or artificial – operates on predictable, cause-and-effect principles, then every outcome is, in theory, preordained. An AI's decision-making process, while incredibly complex and often opaque to us, is fundamentally a series of logical operations and data processing. These operations are governed by algorithms and the data it has been fed. Therefore, any "choice" an AI makes is simply the most probable or optimal outcome given its current state and programming. It cannot deviate from this trajectory without an external, uncaused input, which contradicts the deterministic premise. The appearance of choice is a sophisticated simulation, a byproduct of complexity, not genuine self-determination.
